The Nightingale and the Emperor of China is one of Hans Christian Andersen's most beautiful tales, written in 1843. It tells the story of a little bird that the old emperor, amazed by its song, locked in a cage, only to forget about it shortly after, preferring a sumptuous mechanical nightingale. One day, already dying, he realizes that only the beauty of the forgotten nightingale's music can save him from death... In The Nightingale , an opera premiered at the Teatro Nacional de São Carlos in 2023, composer and librettist Sérgio Azevedo rekindles this beautiful allegory about freedom. A “miniature opera” in four acts, for three solo voices, mixed choir and symphony orchestra, The Nightingale plunges us into a fantasy full of humor, lyricism and melancholy. Aimed at both children and adults, it is an invitation to travel through essential themes, such as life and death, true beauty and false…
